Tōtika prequalification help
We write the evidence pack against every Tōtika criterion for your category, and you review it with tracked changes and sign. Then we prepare every answer and file, fill in the portal where your member scheme (Impac PREQUAL, Avetta, Qualify365 or SHE PRE-Qual) lets you add us as a user, and your employee reviews it and presses submit on a short call with us. Under the Tōtika Scheme Rules the submission has to come from your own employee or a HASANZ-registered consultant, so the final click stays with you.
Independent private document service. Not a government, Site Safe or Tōtika website.
How Tōtika works
Tōtika is the cross-recognition scheme run by CHASNZ, Construction Health and Safety New Zealand. You are assessed once by a member scheme and that result is accepted by 30 or more buyers, instead of a different prequal for every client. The member assessment schemes are Impac PREQUAL, Avetta, Qualify365 (Safe365) and SHE PRE-Qual. You pick one, pay its fee, and submit through it.
Scored 0 to 4
Each criterion is scored from 0 to 4, and 3 means "meets". We write every document to score 3 against the criterion it answers, not just to exist in the upload folder.
How long it lasts
Category S and Category 1 results are valid for two years. Category 2 and Category 3 results are valid for one year. We diary the date for you.
Who pays whom
The scheme fee is paid by you directly to the member scheme. Our fee covers the writing, the review and preparing the submission, and the two are never bundled.
Which Tōtika category are you?
Your category is set by the scheme's rules, not by you or by us. A twelve-person roofing firm is Category 2 because roofing is a high-risk trade, even though the headcount fits Category 1. We check before we quote.
Category S
A sole trader with no employees. A shorter criteria set that still wants real hazard, training, insurance and incident evidence.
Category 1
Up to 20 staff or NZ$2.5m turnover, in a trade that is not classed as high-risk.
Category 2
Up to 200 staff or NZ$20m turnover, and any high-risk trade such as electrical, roofing or traffic management, whatever its size.
Category 3
Larger businesses, or very high-risk work such as scaffolding, Class A asbestos removal or crane operations.
What the member scheme charges
Indicative published fees at the time of writing, paid by you directly to the member scheme and not part of our price: Avetta Category S NZ$198 per two years, Category 1 NZ$398. Impac PREQUAL Category S NZ$298 + GST per two years, Category 1 NZ$598 + GST. Qualify365 from NZ$279. Check the scheme's own site before you budget, and tell us if your client has named one.
What we write, and what has to be yours
Every document is mapped to the Tōtika criterion it answers and written for your trade, your people and your work. The criteria also want evidence that the system is used, and that part only you can supply. Your assessment score depends on your real records as well as the documents — we tell you up front which evidence only you can supply.
Leadership and policy
Health and safety policy signed by the owner, responsibilities, objectives, legal register and a review procedure.
Risk management
Hazard and risk register for your activities, task analyses and JSAs for the high-risk ones, and the SSSP template you will use on site.
Worker engagement and training
Engagement and participation procedure, toolbox talk template, induction procedure and a training matrix naming your people.
Incidents and emergencies
Incident and near-miss reporting, investigation form, register template, notifiable event procedure and an emergency plan.
Contractors and plant
Subcontractor selection and monitoring, plant and equipment inspection procedure and checklists, hazardous substances inventory.
Health monitoring and wellbeing
Health monitoring procedure linked to your exposures, and a wellbeing policy with support arrangements.
Yours to supply, and we list it on day one
Current public liability and statutory liability certificates in the right business name. Dated toolbox talk records, training certificates, completed inspections and your incident register from the last 12 months. Safety data sheets for what you actually use. None of these can be written by us, and the assessor will look for them.
Fixed price, no quote call
NZ$590 for the Category S pack and NZ$890 for the Category 1 pack: every document mapped to the criteria for your category and written for your trade, an evidence list showing which records only you can supply, a tracked-changes review, every answer and file prepared and entered in the portal where your member scheme allows a user, your employee pressing submit on a short call with us, and revisions at no extra cost until the assessor is satisfied. Categories 2 and 3 are quoted after the intake call, because the criteria set and the trade change the work. NZ$290 a year for the annual renewal refresh. NZ$1,290 if you need SiteWise and Tōtika Category 1 together, written from one intake: SiteWise submitted for you, Tōtika submitted by your employee with us on the call. The member scheme's fee is paid by you directly to the member scheme and is never part of our price.
Payment is by bank transfer on invoice: half on acceptance, half when the pack is delivered. No card payments. Prices are in New Zealand dollars. The service is supplied by TAD Compliance Ltd, a United Kingdom company; New Zealand GST is not charged.
If the assessor comes back with questions, we revise our documents at no extra cost until the assessor is satisfied, within the scope of your pack and as long as the information you gave us was accurate, and your employee resubmits with us on the call. This is a commitment to keep working on the documents, not a promise of a grade.
What we do, and what we do not
We prepare the documents and the submission; for Tōtika your employee makes it. Here is the line, drawn before you pay rather than after.
- The Accreditation Desk is an independent private service. We are not Site Safe, SiteWise, Tōtika, CHASNZ, Impac, Avetta, Safe365, SHE or WorkSafe New Zealand and we are not affiliated with them. You can apply to any scheme directly without using us.
- We do not submit Tōtika applications in your name. The Scheme Rules only accept submissions from your employee or a HASANZ-registered consultant, and we are neither. We prepare every answer and file; your employee presses submit
- We are not a health and safety consultancy, we are not on the HASANZ register and we do not carry out site inspections or act as your health and safety adviser
- We do not decide your category or your score. The member scheme assesses and CHASNZ's rules decide
- We do not invent evidence. If you have no toolbox records, no training records and no insurance, we cannot write them into existence
- We cannot guarantee a result. Your assessment score depends on your real records as well as the documents — we tell you up front which evidence only you can supply.
Questions we get asked
How long does a Tōtika assessment take?
We usually have the full pack ready for your review within five to seven working days of the intake call. You review and sign, we enter the answers where your member scheme allows a user, and your employee reviews it and presses submit on a short call with us. The member schemes work to their own assessment windows, typically a week or two, and we handle any questions that come back.
Can you not just submit it for us?
Not for Tōtika. The Scheme Rules (v3.4.2) only accept a submission from an employee of your business or from a consultant on the HASANZ register, and we are not on that register. So we prepare every answer and every evidence file, and where your member scheme's system lets you add us as a user we enter them for you. Your nominated employee then reviews the submission and presses submit, with us on a short call. We will never submit a Tōtika assessment in your name. SiteWise has no such rule, so there we do submit for you, once you approve it in writing.
What does the member scheme charge?
Indicatively, at the time of writing: Avetta NZ$198 per two years for Category S and NZ$398 for Category 1; Impac PREQUAL NZ$298 + GST per two years for Category S and NZ$598 + GST for Category 1; Qualify365 from NZ$279. The fee is paid by you directly to the member scheme and is not part of our price. Check the scheme's own site before you budget.
Our client asked for Impac PREQUAL. Is that Tōtika?
Yes. Impac PREQUAL, Avetta, Qualify365 (Safe365) and SHE PRE-Qual are the Tōtika member assessment schemes. A Tōtika result through any of them is accepted by the 30 or more buyers who recognise the scheme. If your client has named one, use that one. If they have just said Tōtika, we will help you pick.
What happens if the assessor comes back with questions?
We revise our documents at no extra cost until the assessor is satisfied with them, within the scope of your pack and as long as the information you gave us was accurate. We draft the answers and update the documents, and your employee resubmits with us on the call. This is a commitment to keep working on the documents, not a promise of a grade.
How long does a Tōtika result last?
Category S and Category 1 results are valid for two years. Category 2 and Category 3 results are valid for one year. We diary the date and the annual renewal refresh is NZ$290.
We are a sole trader. Do we really need all of this?
Category S exists for exactly that situation and asks for less than Category 1, but it still wants a real hazard register, task analyses for your work, training evidence, insurance and a way of recording incidents. Our Category S pack is NZ$590 and is sized to what the criteria actually ask of a one-person business.
Are you part of CHASNZ or one of the member schemes?
No. The Accreditation Desk is an independent private service. We are not Site Safe, SiteWise, Tōtika, CHASNZ, Impac, Avetta, Safe365, SHE or WorkSafe New Zealand and we are not affiliated with them. You can apply to any scheme directly without using us.
Not sure whether your client means Tōtika, SiteWise or both?
Send us the exact wording from the tender, the onboarding email or the phone call. We will tell you which scheme and which category it means, what you already have that counts, and a fixed price, within one New Zealand business day.
Tell us which Tōtika category you need
Send us your trade, roughly how many people you have and which member scheme, if any, your client has named. We come back with a fixed price in NZ dollars within one New Zealand business day.
